In 1953, Irwin Allen was awarded the most prestigious of accolades, the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for The Sea Around Us. The Academy Award ceremony was held on Thursday 19th March 1953 (covering productions from the year 1952) at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The award was presented to Irwin by Danish actor Jean Hersholt. The other nominees were The Hoaxters and Navajo.

  • Red Buttons won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in the 1957 movie Sayonara.
  • Ronald Neame was nominated for an Academy Award three times for One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942), Brief Encounter (1945), and Great Expectations (1946).
  • Gene Hackman won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the 1971 movie The French Connection and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the 1992 movie Unforgiven. He was also nominated an additional three times for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Best Actor in a Supporting Role in I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and Best Actor in a Leading Role in Mississippi Burning (1988).
  • Irwin Allen won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for the 1952 movie The Sea Around Us and was nominated for Best Picture for The Towering Inferno (1974).
  • Shelley Winters won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in the 1959 movie The Diary of Anne Frank and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in the 1965 movie A Patch of Blue. Shelley was also nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role in A Place in the Sun (1951) and of course, Best Actress in a Supporting Role in The Poseidon Adventure (1972).
  • Ernest Borgnine won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the 1955 movie Marty.
