AUGUST 2011 ARCHIVE

BFI IRWIN ALLEN NIGHT

The British Film Institute (BFI) held a special celebration of the 1960's Irwin Allen science fiction television series on the evening of Tuesday 2nd August 2011.

The evening began with the Irwin Allen TV show title sequences projected up on the big screen and this was quite something to see. The Lost in Space season 3 title sequence literally burst out on the screen. Absolutely stunning. Clips were then shown from each of the four Irwin Allen science fiction series followed by discussions from the panel composed of Irwin Allen News Network crew and two prominent British journalists. FromVoyage to the Bottom of the Sea there were clips from The Indestructable Man and The Cyborg plus some bloopers; from Lost in Space Invaders from the Fifth Dimension and The Forbidden World; from The Time Tunnel there were clips from Rendezvous with Yesterday and Raiders from Outer Space; and from Land of the Giants there were clips from The Crash and Pay the Piper, plus the additional treat of a segment from the April 2011 cast commentary and some Irwin Allen home movie footage. What amazed us was how well the shows lent themselves to the big screen. The audience loved the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea bloopers and responded with great knowledge and humour to the clips that were shown.

At the end of the evening, there was a special prize draw featuring unique Irwin Allen related prizes courtesy of Revelation Films plus some fan written books and an autographed Land of the Giants photo. The floor was then opened up to questions from the audience. We left lots of goodies on a table outside the theatre and these were snapped up along with the photos and posters we handed out in the foyer. There was a small reception afterwards in the Green Room, the doors of which were adorned by the very popular Irwin Allen DVD posters.

Attendence was excellent with nearly two thirds of the audience having seen the shows in the 1960's plus a good number of younger people who we hope will be the next generation of Irwin Allen fan. We were very impressed with the organisation of this event in a lovely location on the Southbank of the River Thames. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the BFI, Revelation Films, and our fellow panelists for their time and efforts in making the evening possible.

Seattle Science Fiction Hall of Fame

We hear that the Seattle Science Fiction Hall of Fame is currently undergoing renovation and that none of the Irwin Allen or sci-fi TV/movie exhibits are on show at the moment apart from temporary Battlestar Galactica and Avatar exhibitions.

So don’t make the trip up to Seattle to see the Irwin Allen items at the present time.  Their web site says the renovation work continues until the summer of 2012, and we do not know what will be on show after that. If we hear any further news we will post details on our sites.
